Law Clerk, Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative

The German Marshall Fund seeks to hire a part-time law clerk to join the new Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative. DIDI harnesses GMF’s extensive networks across the US and Europe to bridge the gap between 20th century policies and 21st century technology. We foster best practices to ensure that the next waves of innovation will support – rather than undermine-- democratic values. DIDI will lead the effort to connect Silicon Valley with the transatlantic policy community to catalyze inclusive innovation that strengthens democracy, with a focus on: (1) digital platforms, (2) work, entrepreneurship, and a social contract, (3) Artificial Intelligence and frontier technologies. DDI will develop new agile, open, and accountable approaches by bringing together policymakers, civil society, technologists, entrepreneurs, and investors from both sides of the Atlantic to identify improvements in policy, institutions, business models, and practices.

The position will report to Senior Fellow and Director of DIDI Ambassador (ret.) Karen Kornbluh as well as Senior Fellow Professor of Law Ellen P. Goodman.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Co-write and edit policy papers and blog posts
  • Attend meetings with D.C. policymakers and tech stakeholders
  • Possibility to work on tech and graphic design if qualified
  • Possibility of international work
  • Organize legal and policy research and materials for policy development

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Superior law school performance
  • Excellent writing abilities
  • Good references
  • Some substantive knowledge of major technology policy and legal issues, especially related to     digital platforms, telecommunications/media, AI, cyber security.

The position is part-time: 10 hours/wk for 10 weeks at $22/hr.; for Spring Semester 2019, with opportunities for extending through the summer and 2019/2020.
